I was speaking to a highly accomplished software programmer, who currently plays the role of a Senior Test Engineer. He essentially, spends almost , the entire work day – in detecting software bugs. The more the number of bugs, the lethal the bugs – the better is his prospects of a ” quicker promotion”.On an average, he detects about 450-500 bugs in a single day ! And when I asked, what differentiates him from the rest, his instant reply was – I don’t take anything for granted ! I go through each and every line of the code and never press the “finish button”, until I am 100% sure that I have run through the lines carefully. I take twice the time to press that “Finish” button. But when I press it, trust me, I am 10 times more effective than my peers !
Stories like these, remind me, of the haste and urgency with which we do few things and end up spending twice the time in “altering it”. It teaches us, the value of being meticulous and being near perfectionist ( although, being a perfectionist ,in itself, is a debatable state).
Few quotes that inspired me,
Perfectionism is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.Vince Lombardi
“Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.” Salvador Dali
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Antoine de Saint – Exupery
“I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God’s business.” Michael J Fox
